How to Choose a right PoE Switch?

Choosing the right PoE switch needs to consider multiple factors, such as the power of the device, physical ports and power supply parameters, etc.

Shenzhen Yuhang Communication Technology Co.,Ltd will introduce to you:

1. Consider the Power of Your Equipment

Correspondingly select the PoE switch of how much power. If the power of your device is below 15W, you can choose a PoE switch that supports the 802.3af standard. If the power is more than 15W, choose a high-power switch of the 802.3at standard.

according to the IEEE standard 802.3af supports 15.4W PoE, IEEE 802.3at supports 30W PoE

eg. Yuhang 4 port PoE switch +1 port uplink, 8 port POE switch are the quite popular models used in CCTV ,which it suits for indoor and outdoor

2. Physical Port

First, determine the number of switch ports, fiber ports, network management, speed (10/100/1000M) and other issues. At present, the interfaces on the market are mainly 8, 12, 16, and 24 ports, the composit like:

8 port gigabit PoE

8 port gigabit PoE + 2G SFP or 2G combo uplink

16 Port gigabit PoE + 2G SFP  or 4G SFP uplink

24 Port gigabit + 2G SFP or 4G SFP uplink

The fiber port is generally one or two ports, and the optical port must pay attention to whether it is 100Mbps or 1000Mbps. Depends on if the switch 's solution supported or not. and depends on the project request as well.

PoE switches are generally used to connect power receiving terminals and act as access switches. Consider the number of PoE power supply ports supported by the switch according to the number of power receiving terminal devices.

In addition, it is also necessary to consider the maximum rate that the port needs to support according to the power receiving terminal and actual needs. For example, if the port of the AP is gigabit and uses 11AC or dual-band, you can consider using gigabit access.

3. Power Supply Parameters

Select an appropriate switch according to the power supply protocol (such as 802.3af, 802.3at, or non-standard PoE) supported by the powered terminal (AP or IP camera).

The PoE power supply protocol supported by the switch needs to be consistent with the powered terminal. There are many security risks in non-standard PoE switches. It is recommended that you try to choose standard 48V PoE switch equipment.

4. Wiring Scheme

Users can compare and calculate the cost of the terminal's local power supply wiring and the cost of using a PoE switch to supply power. At present, the power supply distance of PoE switches is within 100 meters. No layout restrictions, can save about 50% of the overall cost.

The wiring within 100 meters can flexibly expand the network without being limited by the layout of the power line. Hang the wireless AP, network camera and other terminal equipment on the wall or on the ceiling, flexible expansion, easy wiring, and beautiful appearance.
